Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) since skin-to-skin care (SSC) to promote breastfeeding became the standard of care through the Baby-Friendly Hospital (BFH) Initiative (BFHI). Investigators assessed the percentage of births born in BFHs using CDC Breastfeeding Report Cards from 2004–2016. They assessed the percentage of maternity facilities in which SSC was implemented for most mother-infant dyads in the first hour after healthy vaginal births using 2007–2015 data from the CDC’s Maternity Practice in Infant Nutrition and Care surveys.
