Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a retrospective study to estimate the prevalence of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) among newborns with congenital heart disease (CHD) admitted to children’s hospitals and identify risk factors for development of NEC and death in these children. For the study, data from the Pediatric Health Information System (PHIS) database were abstracted. The PHIS database includes demographic and diagnostic information on patients admitted to 48 US tertiary care hospitals. Study participants were neonates (<28 days old) admitted with a diagnosis of CHD between 2004 and 2014.
