Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a prospective study to identify risk factors for early death among youths and young adults with sickle cell disease (SCD). Participants were SCD patients, 3–20 years old, seen at 1 of 4 medical centers and enrolled between 2006 and 2010. At baseline, demographic and medical history data were collected, including information regarding previous stroke, history of transfusions, severe pain episodes, and a diagnosis of asthma. Blood samples were collected for determination of multiple tests, including serum ferritin levels and neutrophil count. Pulmonary function testing was done and an echocardiogram performed.
