Investigators from Denmark conducted a meta-analysis to determine the diagnostic accuracy of red reflex screening. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they: (a) involved infants <1 year old who were not a priori diagnosed with a certain disease, (b) were consecutively screened using the red reflex or Bruckner test, and (c) received an ophthalmologic examination as the reference standard for determination of ocular disease. Eligible studies were identified by searching literature databases such as PubMed/MEDLINE, Cochrane Central, and ClinicalTrials.gov.
