Investigators from multiple institutions conducted a matched comparative cross-sectional study to assess the prevalence and characteristics of temporomandibular disorder (TMD) in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Children were eligible if they had been diagnosed with JIA, were 4-16 years old, and were seen at a participating Norwegian hospital. Healthy controls were eligible if they did not have JIA, were 4-16 years old, and were being seen at a Public Dental Service clinic in Norway. Controls were matched 1:1 with participants with JIA by age and gender. Participants with JIA and healthy controls received an oral examination by experienced dentists using a TMD diagnostic tool and completed a self-assessment questionnaire of TMD symptoms.
