Blood pressures obtained by both a mercury gravity sphygmomanometer and by oscillometry (Dinamap model 8100) were determined and compared in 7208 children ages 5 to 17 years. Significantly higher values in the Dinamap 8100 reading were observed for systolic blood pressure (10.2 mm/Hg) and diastolic blood pressure (4.7 mm/Hg) in each of 6 age groups examined. The authors note that in a prior study1 this degree of difference was not observed when blood pressure was determined in a group of 5th grade children (mean ages comparable to the present study) using a Dinamap model 1846SX compared to a mercury gravity sphygmomanometer.
