There has been little exploration of major biologic regulators of cerebral development in autism. Researchers from the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke, Genetic Disease Branch of the State of California, and UC Davis examined archived neonatal blood drawn for newborn metabolic screening to test for brain growth factors. Subjects included children with autistic spectrum disorders (n=69), mental retardation without autism (n=60), or cerebral palsy (CP, n=63) and control children (n=4).
