Investigators from Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, reviewed a series of 310 patients <15 years of age who underwent surgery for a perianal abscess or fistula-in-ano from 1991–2000. Children with anorectal malformations or inflammatory bowel disease were excluded from the analysis. Mean duration of symptoms prior to surgery was 4.4 months ±10.0 (range 1 week to 120 months). Mean age at surgery was 13.8 months (range 1–168 months); 78% of patients were under age 1 year. Only 7 patients were girls. Twenty-four patients (7%) required a second operation because of recurrence.
