These investigators from Scotland examined whether used infant mattresses are associated with an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The case group comprised all SIDS cases in Scotland from January 1996 through May 2000 (N=195). Babies born immediately before and after the index case in the same maternity unit acted as controls.
